The Gila Wilderness and the CDT corridor running through it have long stretches with zero cell service — real satellite communication isn't optional out there. The inReach Mini 2 is Garmin's smallest satellite communicator, and it's what we point CDT thru-hikers and Gila Wilderness backpackers toward when they ask what to carry for out-of-network emergencies.

At 3.5 oz, it clips onto a pack strap and disappears. It connects over the Iridium satellite network — no cell towers required — for two-way text messaging, GPS tracking, and interactive SOS routed to Garmin's 24/7 emergency response center. Battery runs up to 14 days at the default 10-minute tracking interval, or up to 30 days in power-saving mode.

Do I need a subscription to use this?

Yes — the inReach Mini 2 requires an active Garmin satellite subscription to send messages or trigger SOS; the device itself won't transmit without one. We can walk you through the monthly vs. annual plans when you pick one up, since the right plan depends on how many trips you're actually doing.

How long does the battery actually last on a Gila trip?

Up to 14 days at the default 10-minute tracking interval, or up to 30 days if you switch to power-saving mode. We've run it on multi-day Gila Wilderness trips and it held up through a full week without needing a recharge.

Will it work if I don't have cell signal in the Gila Wilderness?

Yes — it connects over the Iridium satellite network, not cell towers, so it works in the dead zones where phones don't. That's exactly why we point CDT thru-hikers to it before they head into the Gila corridor.

Can I send messages without pairing it to my phone?

Yes, though it's slower. The Mini 2 has no keyboard, so typing directly on the device works but is tedious — pairing it with the free Garmin Messenger app on your phone makes sending and receiving messages much faster.
