Yes — black bears roam throughout the Gila and are frequently seen these days in popular camping areas along the Middle Fork of the Gila River.

Should I bring bear spray or a bear canister?
Many hikers carry both — bear spray for encounters and a BearVault BV475 canister to keep food and scented items secured overnight. We stock the BV475 if you want to go that route.
