The Mezcal is Vittoria's fast-rolling XC tread, and we stock it in both casing builds so you can match it to how you actually ride the Gila rather than settling for whatever's in stock.  There is a reason that this tire has been our best-selling GDMBR for so many years running:  they generally last from Canada to hear, and they roll FAST.  

Race casing (tan sidewall, 29 x 2.4") is the lightest build: a 120 TPI nylon casing with no extra reinforcement, built for going fast on dry singletrack where puncture risk is low.

Trail casing (black sidewall, 27.5 x 2.4") uses the same 120 TPI casing but adds a reinforced layer under the tread and sidewall for real puncture protection — the better call for the Gila's rockier stretches, at a mild weight penalty over Race.

Both are TLR (tubeless-ready) and use Vittoria's 4C Graphene 2.0 compound.

What's actually different between Race and Trail casing?

Same Mezcal tread on both — the difference is protection. Race casing is a bare 120 TPI nylon layer built for speed with minimal reinforcement. Trail casing adds a reinforced layer under the tread and sidewall for real puncture resistance, at a modest weight penalty.

Is this a good tire for the GDMBR?

It's been our all-time favorite GDMBR tire for years running. It's a great match for dirt roads and chill singletrack — the kind of mixed terrain that makes up most of the Divide.

Do I need sealant to run these tubeless?

Yes. Both casings are TLR (tubeless-ready), meaning the bead and casing are built for a tubeless setup, but you still need sealant injected before riding — the tire itself doesn't hold air without it. We stock tubeless sealant and valve cores if you need to complete the setup.
